Alex & Mike's Hotel at the Lafayette Wedding Photos - Buffalo Wedding Photography
Hey everyone! I hope everything is lining up the way you hoped for this Thanksgiving! Today, I’m pumped to share Alex & Mike’s Hotel at the Lafayette wedding photos! It was certainly a unique day in terms of weather, locations and photos. Read on and you’ll see what I mean.
We started things off at the Hotel at the Lafayette in downtown Buffalo, NY. Alex and the girls (all 11 of them!) were getting ready in a suite there along with the hair and makeup artists. There was a great vibe in the room and things were progressing nicely. Before Alex got into her dress, one of the bridesmaids gave her a letter from Mike. It’s always an emotional moment and this time was no different. Soon after that, it was time to get into the dress and head to the ceremony.
A few weeks ago, I shot a reception at the Karpeles Manuscript Library (on Porter Ave) so I was excited to photograph a wedding ceremony in the same location. Originally a Methodist church, the building is now a Library for a private collection of original manuscripts and documents, and also hosts large events like weddings. It’s not the brightest building to begin with and the skies were heavy with overcast so after the ceremony I used a lot of flash. That isn’t something I normally do in that situation but I’m really happy with the way the photos came out.
Alex and Mike wanted to go the Silo City area to Mutual Riverfront Park. I knew when we had hail and saw the waves crashing over the breakers in the lake that this wasn’t going to be an easy photo session, either. It looked like we might get a break in the rain and maybe even in the clouds for a few minutes, but the break never came. Alex, Mike and their wedding party were ready for the challenge so everyone got out and ran to the far side of the Park where Alex wanted a group shot. We regrouped in the limo and after they warmed up a bit and then we went back out. This time, it was just the bride and groom and the photo crew. They lasted longer than I thought anyone would and the photos are amazing!
We had a lot more time than I’m used to in between the ceremony and reception, so I decided to use the Lafayette to do some more photos with Alex and Mike. Again, I typically don’t use a lot of flash in my portraits, but it’s something I’ve been studying and working on. It came in handy when we really didn’t have another option! I set them up in an empty bar on the ground floor of the hotel. It had this really cool art-deco light design behind the bar that I’ve noticed for years but had never taken advantage of. Then, I took them into the hallway for a few more photos. I’m really happy with how they came out! I’m not glad the weather was crazy, but I’m glad we had a good backup plan! These photos are amazing!
The reception was great and we took a few more photos in the courtyard of the Lafayette. It’s always a great location at night to shoot in. Congrats to Alex and Mike! I wish you guys all the best!
